The Link Between Your Gums And Your Weight

Many people do not realize the effect their oral health has on the rest of their body. Studies have proven a link between periodontal (gum) disease and an increased risk of many health-related disease including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Now, researchers are discovering how your weight can also affect your gums.

The association between gum disease and weight has to do with a protein called cytokines. This protein contains inflammation properties, and high levels of cytokines are found in individuals that are obese. Cytokines cause harm to your mouth by reducing blood flow to your gums. Adequate blood flow is necessary to maintain healthy tissue throughout your body, including your gums. Reduced blood flow to the gums leads to gum disease.

Gum disease affects about half of adults, causing inflamed gums that tend to bleed, especially when brushing and flossing. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. As the disease worsens and spreads, teeth become loose, and can eventually fall out or need to be extracted. In fact, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Aside from watching your weight, there are certainly measures you can take to help reduce your chances of developing gum disease. The American Dental Association recommends you brush your teeth twice a day, floss every night, and visit your dentist twice a year. During these dental visits your teeth will be professionally cleaned, your oral health will be evaluated, and any issues discovered will become part of your individualized treatment plan.
