What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a revolutionary cosmetic dentistry treatment that offers an alternative to traditional metal braces. Invisalign gradually straightens your teeth without the need for traditional braces, making it an ideal option. Rather than the traditional process of cementing brackets to your teeth and attaching metal wires, Invisalign utilizes clear, plastic trays called aligners. Eating your regular diet is simple because the aligners are removable.
Invisalign utilizes a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually straighten teeth. Invisalign is the ideal option for those who have avoided traditional orthodontic treatment due to the unsightliness and cumbersome nature of metal braces.
Aligners are not visible or noticeable and do not irritate delicate gums or cheeks like traditional braces tend to do.
Why Should I Choose Invisalign Over Braces?
While both treatments may result in a beautiful, confident smile, comparing Invisalign to braces will help you to understand the benefits.
The clear benefits of Invisalign are:
- Removable to clean teeth
- Removable to enjoy foods
- Teeth straightening process is virtually invisible
- Aligners are smooth, comfortable plastic
- Office visits are only every four to six weeks
Who is the Best Candidate for Invisalign?
The decision to straighten your teeth is an important one that will affect your appearance and your lifestyle. Invisalign is a great option for both teens and adults.
As an adult, you may have been dreaming of straight teeth for most of your life. Or, maybe you had braces as a child and stopped wearing retainers at some point, and now you are noticing some shifting. Invisalign offers adults the convenience of teeth straightening without the hassle of choosing foods carefully or scheduling constant appointments. Plus, a clear, invisible alternative to metal braces is ideal.
Teens are concerned with school, dating, sports and hanging out, and metal braces can make them cringe. The clear, plastic aligners are virtually invisible, and it is unlikely that friends will even know that you are wearing them. Teens playing musical instruments or sports can feel uncomfortable and even experience injury from metal braces; but, not with Invisalign.
What is the Invisalign Process?
Scheduling a consultation with Dr. Songstad is the first step in the Invisalign process. At this time, your individual case will be discussed, and it will be determined if the process is right for you.
The next step is that a customized treatment plan will be developed. This will include x-rays, impressions, and some pictures. Dr. Songstad will map out an individual treatment plan and advise as to the length of the treatment. Treatment is typically one year for adults.
A series of custom-made aligners will be created just for you. You will be instructed to wear them throughout the day, and the aligners will begin to gradually readjust your teeth. Wearing the aligners for approximately 20 hours a day will typically produce the best results.
Approximately every two weeks, you will begin to use a new aligner that will continue to shift your teeth. Every six weeks or so, you will visit your doctor to monitor progress.
